The "gravity" version of the Daniell cell was invented in the 1850s by Cromewell F. Varley in England and Heinrich Meidinger in Germany. Meidinger's three forms are illustrated here in a reprint. The gravity cell was used in the early days of telegraphy and railway signalling where there were closed circuits with a constant but light drain on the cell. The example offered here is an early example as indicated by the glass which is typical of the type used in the mid nineteenth century. Height 9" (23 cm) maximum diameter4.5" (11.5 cm)
