Description:

Talking Doll with composition head, arms and legs and stuffed cloth body with opening and closing glass eyes (blue), real hair wig, head embossed "Mae Starr Doll" on rear, with original dress and boots. Contained in the body a phonograph mechanism by the Averill Manufacturing Co. New York City, USA. Cylinders loaded and started from the rear of the body, winder for the clockwork mechanism on the right hand side of the body. Complete with two celluloid and cardboard cylinders "Now I Lay Me" and "Rock-a-Bye Baby", both phonograph mechanism and cylinders in good playing condition. Sound carried by a small metal accoustic horn with the exit on the front chest. Condition generally excellent: some brown staining of of the cloth body dark above the horn but lighter further up. Some paint loss on the fingers and the rear of the legs. Right index finger has lost the 'skin' of the composition on the finger tip. Some cracking of the composition on the top of the head under the wig, otherwise excellent. Height 28" (72 cm) date 1920s?
