Fifty element voltaic pile by Apps, 433 Strand, London. Apps moved to this address in 1877 and this battery probably dates from this date or shortly thereafter. This is not the earliest voltaic pile I've ever had but it is easily the most impressive and the only signed example I've personally seen. The elements are caged within three glass rods with a wood ebonised base and top. I have included a Leclanché cell for size comparison. It is almost superfluous to say that this is museum quality as I bought it from a museum! height 24" (61 cm) base diameter 7.25" (18 cm)
