Catalogue number #1116849627
Early Victorian terrestial and celestial telescope by Troughton & Simms, London circa 1840. The 2" telescope on a brass tripod with screw elevation (two fixing points) and mechanical screw horozontal rotation using a mahogany and brass handle - this is very uncommon. Two eyepieces and a rare Sun Diagonal (for the observation of sunspots, made for this instrument circa 1900(?)by Watson, London), complete within original Cuban mahogany fitted case. This fine telescope was formally the property of Mr Chapman Jones, an eminent scientist whose obituary is included, together with his photo and Albert Medal (for improvements to photographic chemistry, cased silver 4 oz and engraved with his name and details on the rim). Faults. Case slight damage round the lock in the front plus repaired splits on the lid. Telescope optically brilliant, all mechanical movements in good working order, some minor dents to the main external tube - can supply close-up photos for interested parties - end cap re-lacquored. This is an exceptional piece and the finest table telescope of this type I've ever offered for sale. The interesting provenance is an extra bonus. Note Mr Chapman Jones could not have purchased it from new as he was born in 1855). Larger images available by email on request. Size: case 30.5" x 7.5" x 4" Telescope maximum extention 42" minimum 24.5" Objective 2" Price includes packing and delivery
