In Daniel Davis's "Manual of Magnetism" they are described as a 'revolving electromagnet'. This example is signed Griffen London. The firm of Griffin and Co in London was set up by John Joseph Griffen who was the son of Richard Griffin who ran the firm of Griffen & Co in Glasgow - this Glasgow firm traded from 1837 - 1861. The London branch was only in business from 1850 - 1852 which dates this early electric motor very precisely. height 9" (23 cm) base diameter 3.75" (9.5 cm)
