Description:

Unused large mid Victorian bichromate bottle battery with two zinc anode plates which can be raised independently. This is the only 'double' example I have seen and is consequently much larger and more impressive than the usual examples. Height with zinc rods inserted 12.5" (32 cm), I have included a standard Leclanché cell in one photo for comparison. The 'globe' diameter is 6.7" (17 cm). The top is made of ebonised wood and brass. This is an early hand blown example probably from the 1850s (Grenet invented this battery in 1850), note the air bubbles in the glass and the sharp pontil mark on the base. Later examples of this type of battery were made of moulded glass with vertical lines down opposite sides of the flask where the two part mould was joined.
