| Globe clock with Solstice c. 1930 | Globe Clock with Solstice | Globe Clock with Solstice | Details of Globe | Month and Minute Dials |
|---|
Early twentieth century electric globe table clock with mechanical solstice. The globe revolves once every twenty-four hours with the hour indicated by the arrow in the centre on the stationary diameter band. The minutes are shown on the glass covered dial on the right hand side of the circular base. On the left hand side of the base to the rear is a small silver and black disc which revolves very fast when the clock is working. Also on the left hand side opposite to the minute dial is another dial with the months of the year. This is turned mechanically by the knob in the centre of the glass to the appropriate month and the angle of the sun (over Germany) for the time of year is indicated by the movement of the silver hemisphere over the globe (up and down). The hour is set by the knob in the centre rear of the base. The clock is currently working on a voltage of 220-240 volts at 50 cycles/second and keeps excellent time. Details of the six inch globe are shown in the photos. There are some slight browning patches and small areas of partial transparency probably caused by the vanish darkening over time and a few tiny scratches in the vanish but otherwise the globe is in excellent condition probably due to the fact that it is protected by its cage. (I have tried to be as honest as possible, perhaps to the point of overstating the 'defects' in this description of the globe. I am happy to email a series of pictures showing all surfaces of the globe on request so that you can make your own assessment). Apart from the globe the only marking is the word Germany stamped on the base. Despite looking through many auction records and all the books in my possession I have been unable to find another example of a clock with a solstice, similar or otherwise, accordingly I believe that this example is extremely rare. (If anyone can email me with further information about it I would be extremely grateful). The general construction and nickle plating of the metalwork would appear to indicate a manufacturing date of around the late 1920s to early 1930s. The general condition apart from the marks on the globe noted above is excellent. The clock appears to be 'in original condition' down to the last screw. Height 9.4" (23.7 cm) Price includes delivery by Fedex outside the UK.
