Fine direct vision spectroscope on stand signed on spectroscope and stand by John Browning London. First section telescope with cross wires, centre section with a set of five fixed internal prisms, end section collimator with counting scale slit adjustment and small external prism on a rotating arm. The collimator angle is adjusted by a micrometre screw adjustment for angle measurement on silvered scale with magnifier. Apart from some small spots the lacquer is in fine condition. The telescopic stand has horizontal and vertical adjustments controlled by worm screw threads. The lacquer on the stand is in markedly worse condition that that on the spectroscope giving rise to the supposition that the spectrometer was stored separately from the stand in the past. Height with spectroscope horizontal and the stand at minimum height 17.25" (44 cm) length 17.5" (44.5 cm) date circa 1870. I believe that this was the finest direct vision spectroscope offered by John Browning.
