Description:

I am selling a very rare 'on-off' collection of four antique fetal dolls all from the Obstetrical Museum in Edinburgh. The collection was started when James Simpson (discoverer of chloroform) was the professor of Obstetrics and Midwifery in the late 1840s. Doll no 1 is almost certainly the earliest (probably dating from the mid nineteenth century or possibly even earlier) and is an exceptional medical antique by any standards and I am certain it is a seriously rare piece. I have never seen another example which would compare with it in age, quality and detail. It has a soft leather body with the limbs jointed so the joints may be felt by medical students when using it for practice. The solid wood head is carved with the baby's face and the anterior fontanelle is carved so again it can be felt along with the other cranial sutures. The head is much larger than the other examples and is 'normal' baby's head size. The umbilical cord is missing. 19" (48 cm) occipito-frontal circumference 13.5" (34 cm)
