Wheel from the British submarine HMS Porteus. Built in 1929 by Vickers Armstrong she saw service through the second World War until she underwent a partial refit. Afterwards she underwent "underwater shock tests" and she was sunk due to "an accident" in home waters off the Scottish coast in 1944 with great loss of life. She was salvaged and raised by the Liverpool & Glasgow Salvage Company and scrapped, possibly at Elsa Craig, in 1946. The wheel was presented to Captain Crombie who was in charge of the salvage. The wooden wheel has the following legend inscribed on the centre plate: "Brown Bros & Co Ltd Rosebanks Ironworks Edinburgh. A2342 1929" And on the brass rim at 5 O'Clock in the photo of the wheel illustrated the name inscribed "PORTEUS" Wood wheel with brass fittings diameter from spoke tip to spoke tip 92 cm/36 in Transport will be quoted depending on the destination.
