Description:

L'Art DE Tourner by Charles Plumier engraved front piece 290 pages including 83 folding copper engraved plates, folio. Victorian(?) rebinding in board and cloth with gilt title and the initials GA (also stamped on some pages). This is the first edition of this famous work written in French and published in 1701. This book contains the first description of a lathe for working iron and Father Plumier also describes the method of threading screws. Plumier's book is the earliest known work devoted to turning and it was the standard work on the subject for a hundred years being published in numerous later editions and translated into German. This is one of the cleanest copies I've ever seen of an eighteenth century book, slight brown staining outside the text on the first half dozen pages, diminishing and then virtually clean and un-foxed throughout, just the occasional odd brown stain on a very few pages and repairs in the margins at the spine carried out during the rebinding. I bought this copy privately from a collector who originally purchased it in 1973. Inside the front cover in pencil the previous antiquarian bookseller has written "Fine copy 1st Edition" - I wouldn't disagree.
