Description:

I am selling a very rare 'one-off' collection of four antique fetal dolls all from the Obstetric Museum in Edinburgh. The collection was started when James Simpson (discoverer of Chloroform) was the professor of Obstetrics and Midwifery in the late 1840s. Doll No 2 Soft leather doll with umbilical cord placenta and leather covered wood head with anterior fontanelle cavity, and rear fontanelle cavity, eye sockets, ears and moveable lower jaw with realistic mouth cavity. The legs, arms and neck are jointed and the fingers and toes are defined. This doll represents an exceptionally realistic fetus where all the important features can be identified by touch. This doll dates from the mid Victorian period circa 1860 or possibly earlier. 19" (49 cm)long Umbilical cord 15.5" (39 cm) Occipito-fontal circumference 12.5" (32 cm)
