Italian electromagnetic Terrella otherwise known as a Barlow's Globe signed Marcellino in Alessandria circa 1840 (I think - the construction of the base with the lead doughnut insert is typical of this period and earlier). The model Earth is wound with copper wire along the parallels of latitude. When connected to a battery a magnetic field is formed, which can be detected by the compass and dipping needles. Note the small round bone insulator round the pivit point on one side. The only other example of which I am aware is owned by Pavia University also dated circa 1840 but I've little doubt that this example is older (and better!) It is more likely (in my opinion) that my dating is correct and that the example at Pavia University is later than stated. See "Nineteenth Century Scientific Instruments" by Gerard L'E. Turner page 176. Size Globe diameter 6" (15 cm) Base diameter 7.5" (19 cm) height to top of globe 14" (36 cm)
