Description:

Jules Richard anemometer made in France late nineteenth early twentieth century. In March, 1901 Wilbur Wright asked Octave Chanute (a statesman in aeronautics in the US, he was French born) about what type of anemometer they should use in their tests at Kitty Hawk. Chanute wrote Wilbur that the "best is made by Richard in Paris". Later in April, 1903 while Chanute was in Paris, he purchased one and gave it to the Wrights as a gift. I am indebted for the information above from the customer who bought my previous example for the Franklin Institute dedicated to the Wright Brothers. I was also sent a photo of Wilbur Wright holding the identical anemometer - how I wish I could find it now! In any case this is the identical instrument to that used at Kitty Hawk to measure the wind speeds. Made in nickle plated brass and in good working order signed J R in monogram length 9" (23 cm) diameter 3.6" (92 mm)
