Voltameter (for measuring the strength of an electric current by means of electrolysis in this case almost certainly water), signed on the mahogany wood top Apps, 433 Strand, London. Apps manufactured at this address from 1866 though most instruments made in the following ten years were given the address 433 West Strand so the probability is that this piece dates from the 1870s rather than the 1860s. Note the early hand blown glass: easy to observe but very difficult to photograph - I've done my poor best! This is the nicest example I've ever seen, definately 'museum quality'. height 13" (33 cm) base diameter 6" (15 cm)
