Early philosophical motor by King, Mendham & Co, electrical engineers and contractors, Bristol (England) probably dating from the 1870s or 1880s. This is a large example of this early type of electric motor wound with cotton insulated wire wound round the outside of the shallow metal circular dish. A solid copper armature is pivoted on the central pole and revolves when the dish is filled with mercury and an electric current applied - I used a twelve volt car battery - the ripples in the mercury caused by the turning armature can be seen in the photos. Base 13" (33 cm) 11" (28 cm) Circular dish diameter 9.5" (24 cm). Mercury not supplied.
