Large fine compound microscope signed H. Shuttleworth, Ludgate Street, London. dating from the last quarter of the eighteenth century. Sadly this microscope has lived for decades under a glass dome and its case with additional lenses is long gone, but that has preserved the instrument and what remains is a rare and very fine complete microscope with most of its original lacquor in fully functioning order. The remaining objective lens numbered 6 produces a superb image and all racks are complete and undamaged. The sprung slide-holder has an integral condenser and fits slugly into the signed stage and the concave silver speculum (lieberkuhn) which locates to the edge of the stage, is in near pristine condition. The concave mirror is in really very good condition with a few spot marks but the plain mirror on the reverse has considerable separation of the silvering from the glass (image on request) This is a beautifully engineered instrument to the highest standards of late eighteenth century workmanship. Henry Raines Shuttleworth was apprenticed to John Cuff he worked at this address designated "Ludgate Street" from 1774-1788. From 1780-1796 his instruments were signed 23 Ludgate Street (Dictionary of British Scientific Instrument Makers 1550-1851) Additional higher resolution images on request.
