Heliostat signed J.T.Silbermann Inventeur Soleil Fecit a Paris. No 7. Silbermann invented his universal single mirror heliostat in 1843 this example is the original model, later examples were made by Duboscq. Designed to produce a steady intense beam of light from the sun before the development of the electric light heliostats were always unusual and are now rare scientific instruments. The Silbermann is perhaps the best known example. Typically they were used by geologists in microscopy and in polarisation measurements where the light would be diminished by half. Original fitted Walnut wood carrying case with brass handle. 11.5" (28 cm) x 10.75 (27.5) x height 15" (38 cm). Good working order.
