Description:

Linear dividing engine by J. Hicks, 8 Hatton Garden, London. This rare and magnificent piece of Victorian precision engineering is for use in dividing linear lengths. The extreme left hand side has a large screw which can be set with stops to advance the scriber in the centre by fixed amounts. Turning the handle backwards disengages the feed screw so that the process can be repeated again and again forwarding the scriber by the same fixed amount from left to right as far as required. The quality of this piece can perhaps be gagued by the fact that the brass work is all gold plated. When not in use the machine is covered by a glazed cover. J. Hicks is recorded as working at 8 Hatton Garden from 1875-1890
