Electrostatic Barrel Friction Machine with Accessories Eighteenth Century Barrel Friction Machine Barrel Friction Machine in travelling case items stored in lid not shown Similar Example dated c.1790 in National Museum of Scotland

Description:

Late eighteenth century unnamed barrel friction electrostatic machine in original pine packing case with accessories, two Leiden jars, discharging tongs, insulated stool on glass legs etc. A near identical but slightly larger example is displayed in the National Museum of Scotland. This latter example is by the London scientific instrument makers W & S Jones and is dated circa 1790. I attach an illustration for comparision. Apart from the obvious similarity with the example offered here the iron handles on the packing case are virtally identical which provides striking evidence that the two sets are contempory. (Photos of the handles sent on request). Size of case 25.5" (64 cm)x 16.25" (41 cm) x 23.75" (60 cm) high. Condition generally excellent.
