Edison Spring phonograph with recorder and reproducer. The Edison Spring motor was so called because it was the first clockwork driven phonograph introduced by Edison after his electrically driven phonographs. It was first offered for sale in 1895 and fitted with either the 'Peerless' or 'Amet' motor. This example has the latter a massive three spring motor playing about fourteen cylinders to one winding. In the early Spring Motor phonographs the recorder or reproducer was secured in the carrying arm by two curved plates each secured by two knurled screws. This was superceeded by two small lever clamps, the system in use in this example. It was introduced in 1897 or 1898. This phonograph is in quite exceptional condition. It is the nearest example I have ever had to a 'mint' example in over thirty years during which time I have sold more than three hundred machines. The outside of the case, an 'overall' lid is clean but dull but inside everything is gleaming, just look at the photographs I have done nothing but wipe the phonograph with a sof duster. The inside of the case is virtually oil free, the motor looks as if it has just left the factory! Excuse me if I rave a little but I have never seen another example in this condition and never expect to see another. the only minor blemish is a couple of small blemishes on the feed screw thread but they do not effect the tracking or playing of the machine. This phonograph came from the attic of a private house where I suspect it had been since Queen Victoria was on the throne. It had no horn or cylinders with it and one wonders if it ever had since it would appear not to have ever been played. For those unfamiliar with this rare model this is a massive machine.
