Description:

1897 penny coin-operated Columbia Graphophone Type BS also known as the "Eagle" in an oak case with glass sides and curved glass front. Together with a rare original tune insert, the first I've ever had (or seen since the 1970s!) As far as I can judge all the glass is original too, as each piece has the tiny flaws that one associates with early plate glass. Originally issued with acoustic earphones these were usually replaced early on with a tin horn as in this case, which I personally think makes it a more attractive machine. This is the most original example of this phonograh that I've ever seen. Note: I have not had time to 'sequence' the operations so that it operates correctly with the coin and winding. I also expect that the springs will inevitably need replacing if it is to operate perfectly, as this machine needs full power to work against the arm return spring. I have two new replacement springs (which will be sent with this phonograph if it is sold in its current state). Early Technology gives an unqualified guarantee that this phonograph is complete with no parts missing or replaced, except for one locating nut and bolt holding the base of the phonograph to the wood plinth. (This shows as a bright silver bolt thread in the image showing the underside of the case) . Normally I would complete this work before offering any item on my web site but I have such a huge quantity of urgent work to be completed by the end of May for the Olympia Fine Art and Antiques Fair in London 5 - 15 June, that I am prepared to offer it as is at a discount of £250 in this instance.
