Description:

Magnificent life size bust of Lord Kelvin (William Thomson) 1824 - 1907. He was one of the greatest scientists in the world of the Victorian era. Kelvin temperature scale etc. Search google for further biographical details - many sites are dedicated to him, his discoveries and his inventions. He was a genious not only in theoretical physics but also had the unusual ability to apply himself to practical applications. I mention just one (because you can see a rare example on this web site. From the home page search under "sold as well as unsold items" put in the word:- Siphon)The siphon recorder was invented by him in 1867 to receive telegraphic transmissions from the newly laid transatlantic cable. It was manufactured by Muirhead in Glasgow and used on all subsequent submarine telegraphic cables. Modelled from life probably by the sculpter Archibald Macfarlane Shannan ARSA, 1850 - 1915 who made several busts of Lord Kelvin from life, one in marble and the rest in bronze. This bust shows Lord Kelvin dressed in his academic robes from Glasgow University where he was a professor. Cast in bronze it weighs 20 kg (42 lbs) height 41 cm (16"), width 45 cm (17.75"), depth 25 cm (9.75"). Condition near perfect. I have owned this bust for some time but perhaps it is now time to offer it for sale to make way for something new. I will be quite sad to sell him and say goodbye. (It was the same with a bust of Marconi that I had in my office some years ago eventually we had to part company!) Delivery at cost to anywhere in the world.
