Description:

Following on the experiments of professor Helmholtz in analyzing the components of sounds (see Helmholt's spheres on this web site for more details) König, the eminent acoustical instrument maker, made an important modification in the resonance globe. He devised a cylindrical resonator and the end which receives the sound can be drawn out. As the sound becomes deeper, the same resonator may be tuned to a variety of notes. As the successive application to the ear of various resonators was both slow and tedious, König then organized his resonator bank to act on mamometric flames (using coal gas) so that the sounds became visible. The two parallel lines of resonators are tuned to give the notes from F1 to C11, four and a half octaves. Each of the fourteen resonator drums is signed with the monogram RK (Rudolph König - Paris)and probably date from about 1865. This is the only set I have ever seen for sale so I guess there must be exceedingly rare. The largest drum is 7" (178 mm) in diameter by 7" (178 mm) high closed above the base board. The equivalent sizes for the smallest drum are 1.1" (27 mm) and 1.25" (32 mm). The base board is 36" (91 cm) x 15" (38 cm) maximum height 19" (48.5 cm)
