Moving-magnet reflecting astatic galvanometer originally from the Wheatstone Laboatory. This is an early instrument possibly dating back as early as the 1870s. It is unnamed but either English or possibly German manufacture. It is of large size being 20.5" (520 mm) tall. The circular centre part being 4.375" (110 mm) in diameter. The mechanism is easily removable (twist and pull)showing the fine construction with brass pillars and a fine aluminium fan blade attached at the base to dampen oscillations. The wood base is 9" (230 mm) diameter. The Wheatstone Laboratory was a famous British experimental physics laboratory named after Charles Wheatstone the pioneer of telegraph, electrical timekeeping and much else. Oddly enough he did not invent the apparatus with which his nme is most closely associated the Wheatstone bridge!
