Very unusual Grenet bichromate battery in a hand blown cylindrical twisted glass jar. The twists are unusually on the inside, the outside is smooth. On the base is a very sharp pontil. Apart from being a good example of the glass maker's art this looks decidedly 'domestic' rather than for the normal use of these batteries in a laboratory. The reason Grenet batteries were not normally used in a domestic situation was because of the toxicity of liquid used. I surmise that this battery was made in this manner because it was to be used (and it has been used the anode is half dissolved), in a situation probably commercial "where looks mattered" i.e. perhaps in a board room of a company. I cannot say that it is unique but this is the only example like this I have seen. It turned up in Germany. Date? My guess since it is hand blown is 1880s but it could be later. Height 11" (28 cm) base diameter 4.5" (11.5 cm)
