Exceptional single drawer monocular signed on the vellum drawer Ayscough London green shagreen outer with ebonised wood. The lenses are in wonderful condition with no significant scratches, contained in original velvet lined sharkskin case also in good condition. The only significant defect is two chips of wood missing from the top of the lower mounting. James Ayscough was an important optician who was Master of the Spectaclemakers' Company of London 1752-1753 so this monocular most probably dates from the second quarter of the eighteenth century. A piece of this age and in this condition is rarely found today. Monocular closed 2.5" (63 mm) maximum diameter at base 1.5" (38 mm) Case 2.9" (75 mm) diameter 2" (50 mm)
