Finely made silver gilt mounted lens with tiny continental assay stamps, early nineteenth or late eighteenth century. I call this a 'library glass' because it does the job that large library glasses do i.e. magnify at a distance so that middle aged persons like me can read the book titles on the top shelf without having to climb a step ladder. I have tried to illustrate this with my second photo. The enlarged image - about ten feet (three metres) distant from the lens can be clearly seen in the lens. Unfortunately in the photo it is not totally sharp as the camera auto focus is confused! But the image is very sharp in 'real life'. As a 'normal' magnifying glass it is hopeless see the third image where the lens is used close-up. Magnification is effectively nil. This is not only a fine antique but also exceptionally useful - why don't they still make them? Gilt slightly rubbed, very slight kink in the shaft otherwise excellent 3.5" (90 mm)long
