The first direct current electricity as opposed to static electricity was discovered by Alessandro Volta in 1800. Typically now mostly in museums all early Voltaic piles were made in the UK using copper coins. If relatively unused one can sometimes read the dates on them thereby getting an idea of their age but alas not in this case the coins are too used. (Admittedly I haven't checked many, only where the pile naturally seperated). Obviously old nineteenth century but how close to the date of 1800 is anyone's guess still this is a rare example from one of the UK's oldest university laboratories and is the first 'genuine' example I have ever bought. Height 7" (18 cm) Mahogany base diameter 3" (7.5 cm)
