Description:

Clockwork automaton moving picture of the crucifixion scene coloured in watercolours with the name signed C DORLEANS,(D' Orleans?), glazed in a gilt frame. This astonishing and unusual piece has nineteen movements, twelve moving heads, five arms (one with a spear and one with a sword), one dog's tail and Mary wringing her hands; it's pretty busy! The gilt frame is new - it cost the previous owner £600, more than I would have paid, but it is of excellent quality. The clockwork motor runs noisily and the movements have been mechanically restored, it works well. Frame hinged at the top with strut for holding it open for front winding of the clockwork motor near bottom RHS, on/off lever on the RHS behind the frame. Probably French dating from the nineteenth century. I have never seen another example of this automaton! The "sun" in the picture is the flash of my camera off the glass, I tried floodlights but they produced a worse result. Transport at cost. 37" (94 cm) x 30" (76 cm) depth 9" (23 cm)
