Boxed apparatus for comparing spectrum's for attachment to a telescope up to six inches in diameter. Three prisms are mounted at the front illuminated by an oil lamp with slits that can be adjusted remotely using the extended arms (one non functional but could be made to work). A further spectrum comparison can be introduced from the side of the black enclosed tube, the light from all of them falling on to a collimator lens combination which can be angled with the brass adjusting screw on the side to direct the light rays through a triple prism (removable) to the rear before passing though of the rear tube with a further lens and terminating in another slit with a removable magnifier. This piece looks extremely early to me in spectroscopy terms especially the oak fitted box which I would date to about 1850 or even earlier. Fitted in the box in a leather case is a spectrometer slit measurer - a fairly specialist piece of kit! Box diamensions length 25.25" (64.5 cm) width large end 15.25" (39 cm) small end 10" (25.5 cm)
