Description:

Movable scale station barometer by J. Newman (business at 122 Regent Street, London ceased when Newman retired in 1856) sold by "Negretti and Zambra, Opticians to the Queen, London" circa 1850. Massive 'scientific' barometer with a very large half inch diameter tube and large mercury reservoir, ivory setting peg etc. Contained in a double lock ebonised case (apparently also made of ebony!)with a mirror back, bevelled glass sides and plate glass front. It is very heavy containing a vast amount of mercury as well as the plate glass. An identical barometer (but with just a back board mounting) is illustrated in the book "The Banfield Family Collection of Barometers" by Edwin Banfield (1995)plates 94 and 95. regarding this barometer the notes state, "Regarded as the most successful station barometer ever made and was installed in all the main meteorological observatories in the British Empire." There are very few items I sell that I would be happy to 'keep forever'. This is one. The photos do not do it justice. This is an exceptionally fine 'scientific' barometer made entirely of metal and glass and I will email better larger size images to any interested buyer if requested. Working order.
