For sale Monkton House and Monkton House Cottage, Old Craighall, Musselburgh, Midlothian EH21 8SF, Scotland, UK

Monkton House is a grade A listed fortified laird's house situated in the country six miles from the Royal Mile in Edinburgh and fifteen miles from Edinburgh Airport (accessed via the City Bypass). The house is built of deep pink sandstone under a slate roof. The external walls vary in thickness from over seven feet to nearly three feet, making the house relatively inexpensive to heat. The original tower house with its gunloops is of pre fifteenth century construction and was added to in stages to about 1710. In the late seventeenth century Monkton House was remodeled reputedly by Sir William Bruse giving the two sides of the house completely different characteristics, fortified to the front and domesticated to the rear.
The present house is L-shaped covering two sides of the courtyard opposite which is a separate cottage (grade B listed "within the curtilage of a grade A listed building"), with the original stabling and garages underneath. The policies cover about three acres.
