Smith & Beck Achromatic Microscope c.1849
This is one of the earliest Smith & Beck microscopes serial number 295. Smith & Beck set up in a business partnership in 1848. The Royal Microscopical Society has two examples in its collection serial numbers 182 dated 1848 and number 326 dated 1849 obviously the example on offer falls between these two. What you see is what you get it is a fine early achromatic microscope made by one of the best London makers but there is no box or further spares. The instrument works perfectly, all racks functioning including the two on the stage and the fine focus, mirrors not bad but some greying and spotting. Lacquor mostly complete with some spotting and staining as in the photos but mostly lacking on the top two-thirds of the microscope tube. Graduated extension tube as shown in the photo incorporated. Good pre 1850 achromatic microscopes are increasingly hard to find. Price includes delivery to anywhere. Further photos or close-ups on request. Height 17" with extension tube 23" (58 cm)
