Anderson Road Skates 1895

A pair of Anderson “road skates” with carrying bag. Patented 17 December 1895 these were amongst the world’s first practical skates that could be used on cobbled streets as opposed to specially created rinks. They were made with six and a half inch wheels, including the “Clincher” rubber tyre the large size makes balancing more difficult but it was necessary to cope with the uneven road surfaces of the late nineteenth century. Note also the wheel scraper on the front tyres to remove the horse droppings which covered every public road before the motor car took over from horse transport. Condition near perfect for their age, all the leather straps and fittings on the skates are in excellent condition. The skates are fully useable should one wish to try them out! Length 25.5” (65 cm) wheels 6.5” (16 cm)
