Victorian Electrical Anemometer
Victorian ex-museum anemometer in a wood case containing an early electrical dynamo which enabled the operator to read off the wind speed directly on a suitably calibrated galvanometer connected to it from the current generated by the wind turning the dynamo. From the construction of the dynamo I would date this instrument from the 1880s - note the early brushes. On the rear door is the museum reference number and a note "A drop of finest sperm oil should be placed on each end bearing once a day." Alas I do not have any sperm oil so instead I used the finest clock oil. The instrument is in full working order and generates milli-amps of current in use. I have never seen or heard of another electrical anemometer as early as this example.
