Plug bayonet for boar hunting signed "Manvfactvre Royale D'Alsace" brassmounted ebony handle with engraved steel blade with images of boars and birds, dogs etc. with traces of gilding. Overall 16½"(41.6 cm) blade 10¾" (27 cm) The manufacture "Royale D'Alsace" was established in 1732 by Caspar Engels who left Solingen (the famous centre odf sword making in Germany) after an epidemic of dysentery and a military occupation. Bayonets were made until about 1750 after which the business apparently gave up manufacturing them to concentrate on swords. This is a very rare and fine piece.
