Equinoctial Compass Sundial by Dolland
Large late eighteenth century brass equinoctial compass sundial signed on the hour ring Dolland, London. The spring-loaded gnomon with scroll support, the silvered hour dial with Roman numerals with sub-divisions for five minutes, the gnomon support with 'zig-zag' decoration, the compass with finely engraved silvered dial, level cross bubbles, the needle marked 'N' and indistinctly 'S' on pivot, the folding silvered latitude arc engraved 0º-60º The dial with three adjustable screw feet, on rear engraved with the latitudes of London, Lisbon, Ostend, Glasgow, Norwich, Paris, Dublin, Dantzick and Exeter. The overall condition of this dial is as good as any I have ever seen. No repairs. All the silvering and the glass over dial are original. All levelling screws are original with spot numbering.Almost all of the original lacquer is present - I describe it as being in good but not 'perfect' condition. I'm happy to email higher definition images on request for any prospective purchaser to verify the condition. Hour ring diameter 113 mm, overall external diameter 156 mm.
