Diptych dial by J. Kleininger
German diptych pocket sundial signed J. Kleininger on the compass rose. Made of wood with delicately coloured and decorated paper faces decorated in the neo-classical taste with swags, flowers and foliage surrounding the vertical and horozontal dials, the topside of the lid pasted with a label of the latitudes of thirty-six cities and towns 2¾"(7.0 cm) long. late eighteenth early nineteenth century. This is the first 'clean' example I have seen of this type of dial for over ten years. Everything is original, (including the original mica cover over the compass needle) and complete except for small parts of the paper label listing the cities on the outside and a tiny 'nick' in the dial. See photos.
