Wheatstone ABC Dial Telegraph 1859
Wheat stone 'ABC' dial telegraph Post Office 1958 model. White enamel dial with the alphabet and symbols round the outer ring and the numerals printed ascending and descending round the inner dial. In the centre the words C. Wheatstone Invt. 1840 New Patent 1858. Surrounded by a brass lacquered bezel and set in a sloping mahogany case with a hinged back with connecting terminals. At the base of the bezel is a lever for advancing the pointer one division art a time. Dial and bevelled glass perfect, some spotting on the original brass lacquer. Mahogany case near perfect with original polish apart from one small split in the wood at the top LHS as seen in the photo. To rear old repair (extension) to the lever at the rear otherwise as ex-manufacture. Internally beautiful fine and delicate mechanism of pocket watch quality. Some of the shellac covering of the green cotton covered wires has become very brittle with age and fallen off however this should not effect the functioning of the instrument. base 6.9" (17.5 cm) x 5" (13 cm) height 6" (15 cm)
