Plug Bayonet Royale D'Alsace
Plug bayonet for boar hunting signed "Manvfactvre Royale D'Alsace" brassmounted ebony handle with engraved steel blade with images of boars and birds, dogs etc. with traces of gilding.
Overall 16½"(41.6 cm) blade 10¾" (27 cm)
The manufacture "Royale D'Alsace" was established in 1732 by postgres Engels who left Solingen (the famous centre odf sword making in Germany) after an epidemic of dysentery and a military occupation. Bayonets were made until about 1750 after which the business apparently gave up manufacturing them to concentrate on swords.
This is a very rare and fine piece.
