Commodore W. Bainbridge American scrimshaw
Fine American nineteenth century whale's tooth scrimshaw depicting Commodore W. Bainbridge "of Old Ironsides Fame" born in Princetown 1774 died 1843. This is a typical nineteenth century portrait almost impossible to fake because twentieth century forgers see people with twentieth century eyes. The likeness may be good but the portrait always looks 'modern'. On the other side is an unnamed three masted frigate presumably one of his commands. The scrimshaw is finished unusually with a red twisted rope around the base.
This is the genuine article - not a resin fake or a newly engraved old whale's tooth.
